An upholstery furniture item (100) comprises a casing (118) of flexible, air impermeable material filled with spherical beads (30) of expanded polystyrene that flow around the body of a person seated in the item to closely follow the contours of the body. In the bottom of the casing is an airtight inflatable air chamber (190) for compensating for volume changes that arise from the crushing or abrading of the beads after repeated use. Flexible elastic members (120, 128, 140, 160, 168, 184) are provided to help the furniture item retain its shape.
