The invention relates to a display device for the improved representation of shade of grey images. Said device comprises a monitor (31) which is controlled by s electrode beams. A correcting unit (33) is provided in order to produce s output image signals AS from an image signal (34); said output image signals AS containing shade of grey values from an amount K of correction grey scale and said image signal (34) containing shade of grey values from an amount M of original shade of grey (23). The s output image signals AS are fed to an electrode beam respectively and represent a brightness-controlled shade of grey on a point of the monitor (31) after D/A conversion in order to adapt the brightness distribution of the monitor to the optimum perceptional brightness distribution.
