An upwards continuous casting process employs a ring (2) at a vertically oscillating mould inlet for vertically compressing the developing strand skin (6). An upwards continuous casting process employs a horizontal ring (2) of high melting material, located in the inlet region of the vertically oscillating mould (1, 4), for vertically compressing the developing strand skin (6) in the primary solidification region by means of the advancing mould so that uniform strand skin thickness or homogeneous material consistency is produced over the entire strand circumference. An Independent claim is also included for a mould for use in the above process.
