A piston with a variable compression magnitude for a piston machine, especially an IC engine, comprises: - an inner piston connected with a driving apparatus; and - an outer piston bounding a working chamber in a cylinder, adjustable relative to the inner piston, the outer piston's compression magnitude being adjustable to a corresponding distance relative to the inner piston by means of a controlled fluid amount in a control chamber between the pistons. A rheological fluid of constant amount is supplied in a communicating chamber system provided in the piston. The chamber system comprises the control chamber and a storage chamber designed in the inner piston, connected via a hole in the bottom of the inner piston. Out of this, the rheological fluid is supplied into the control chamber via movements of the piston and a part-amount corresponding to the respective compression magnitude is held by means of field-controlled variable viscosity.
