Automotive drum brake shoes are operated by a gear mechanism (1) within a housing (2) by two brake pistons (3, 4). The pistons (3, 4) are operated by a pushrod (5) linked to a first cog (6) which is rotated by a second cog (7). The two cogs (6, 7) intermesh such that the first cog (6) is capable of movement along its axis of rotation.
