In the event of oil-spillage, marine wild life, such as birds and mammals, are protected/warned by activation of a buoy-mounted system emitting a range of warning sounds and/or flashing light signals. The signals can be adapted to most effectively frighten off particular species from the contaminated area, and may be transmitted above or below the water line.
