A procedure for controlling a drive unit of a vehicle has motor-adjusting parameters determined in accordance with at least one default value, whereby the motor-adjusting parameters serve to adjust the default value. With the determination of the motor-adjusting parameters, optimization criteria are considered which change during a travel cycle according to external and/or internal influences. The optimization criteria are a minimal consumption or maximum efficiency, least emission, greatest heat development, least noise development and/or greatest dynamics possible. A control unit is provided to control the drive train of the vehicle that controls the drive train in accordance with optimization criteria.
