The surgical gripping instrument comprises a return spring (9,11,16) which tapers towards the end position, and has a reduced spring constant. From an exit position to an intermediate position the spring has a low spring constant, which increases to the end position. The return spring is a flexion spring whose action is reduced in the direction of the stopping position via a stop (13) positioned at an intermediate point.
