The spread-out airbag is laid between at least one first(10) and at least one second(12) folding element, after which the folding elements are shortened and the airbag is compressed to form especially a meander-form fold. Sections of the folding elements during shortening are moved in a direction at right angles of the direction of movement, this taking place preferably where there are gaps. During shortening the folding elements are moved in zigzag fashion in the direction of the airbag. An Independent claim is included for a device to carry out the airbag folding procedure and which is equipped with a first and a second folding element, forming a space for the airbag in between.
