The invention relates to a cost-effective method for producing precipitated starch esters consisting of carboxylic reaction solutions. The starch esters obtained by the inventive method are particularly suitable for producing dry blends or for further processing in the form of a dispersion by virtue of the large surface of the starch ester particles. The method is characterised in that the main portion of the carboxylic acid is reduced to a radical carboxylic acid content greater than 0.5 percent by weight carboxylic acidic esters reaction mixtures in a predrying step and in that a dispersion of the acidic ester particles is produced by means of subsequent water treatment or processing with C1 to C4 alcohol. Said dispersion contains only small amounts of carboxylic acid. Fine, porous starch ester particles with a large surface and good processing properties are obtained by separating, washing and drying said dispersion.
