A fungicidal wood protectant composition contains as active agent at least one alkyl or benzyl p-hydroxybenzoate ester (or its salt) (I). A fungicidal wood protectant composition contains as active agent 0.01-10 (preferably 0.5-3, especially 1.5-2.5) wt. % of at least one p-hydroxybenzoic acid derivative of formula (I). R = 1-5C alkyl or benzyl; M = H, alkali metal, alkaline earth metal or copper. Independent claims are also included for: (i) the use of (I) as fungicidal wood protectants; and (ii) a method for protecting wood against fungal attack, involving impregnating the wood with a solution of (I) and drying.
