PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a strong buttonholing stitch of a beautiful appearance and excellent touch and a buttonholing sewing machine capable of sewing the buttonhole of such a stitch without the need of a complicated structure or labor. SOLUTION: In this buttonholing stitch for sewing the periphery of an elongated buttonhole H, at the periphery of the end part of the buttonhole H, a cross stitch crossing the center part C and going over the extension line of the buttonhole H almost at the right angle is formed together with radial stitches whose center part C is a prescribed part including the extension line of the buttonhole H.
