FLOAT GLASS FOR DISPLAY SUBSTRATE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress the occurrence of defects in quality by providing a specified strain point and a specified Cl content in the matrix glass. SOLUTION: The float glass for a display substrate has >=580 deg.C strain point and 0.01-0.09 wt.%, preferably 0.03-0.09 wt.% Cl content based on the amount of the matrix glass. When the Cl content exceeds the upper limit, the frequency of occurrence of defects due to deposits of 20-300μm size present on the surface and defects due to recesses of >=1μm depth present in the surface increases. In the case of below the lower limit, a sufficient refining effect is not produced. The float glass may contain up to 200 ppm SO3 for refining based on the amount of the matrix glass. Alkali oxides may be contained in the float glass by up to 2.0 wt.% of the amount of the matrix glass.
