PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a salicylic acid derivative having excellent color-developing performance as a color developer of a pressure-sensitive paper while suppressing the formation of by-products by controlling the reaction temperature. SOLUTION: A salicylic acid derivative such as 3-α-methylbenzylsalicylic acid suitable as a color-developer for pressure-sensitive paper is produced by mixing salicylic acid with a styrene compound in the presence of water and an acidic catalyst such as polyvalent metal salt of acetic acid, refluxing the mixture under heating, removing water and reacting with a styrene compound and/or a benzyl halide. |
