PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for obtaining a hydrophilic polymer by a simple process from monomeric components contg. a water-soluble monomer and a difficultly water-soluble monomer. SOLUTION: This is a method for producing a hydrophilic polymer from a difficultly water-soluble monomer and one or more water-soluble monomers by soln. polymerization, wherein the difficultly water-soluble monomer has a solubility of less than 5 wt.% in water at 50 deg. and comprises an ethylenic unsatd. group and-R1-[CHR2(CH2)mO]n-R3 [wherein R1 represents -COO-, -CH2COO-, -CONH-, -CHCONH-, -NH-, -(CH2)pNH- (where p is 1-4), or -(CH2)qO- (where q is 1-4); R2 is a hydrogen or a methyl group; m is 1-3; n is 1-60; and R3 represents a hydrophobic group having four or more carbons] as a group directly connected with a carbon atom of the ethylenic unsatd. group, and a hydrophilic solvent having a solubility of 10 wt.% or more in water at 25 deg.C or a mixture of the solvent and water is used as the polymerization solvent.
