PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a germicide capable of exhibiting excellent antimicrobial properties and algicidal properties without causing a polymer precipitate by adding a specific compound as a scale inhibitor to a quaternary ammonium salt polymer. SOLUTION: This germicide comprises (A) a quaternary ammonium salt polymer and (B) polyvinylimidazoline. Preferably an alkylated polyalkylenepolyamine quaternary ammonium salt, a polyalkylenepolyamine quaternary ammonium salt, N,N,N',N'-tetramethylpropylenediamine/ bromochloropropane polycondensate, or the like, may be cited as the component A. The germicide is not limited to a use for cooling water, widely usable as an antimicrobial agent and an algicidal agent and can be used for sterilizing fibers and resins and disinfecting swimming pools, bathrooms, or the like.
