PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for detecting bacteria that can simply detect bacteria in high sensitivity by introducing a label substance into the bacteria by the infection of the bacteriophage in the presence of both of the label substance and nucleic acids and optically detecting the label substance in the bacterial cells in no need of high-grade techniques such as gene recombination, as the back ground noise of the uninfected phage is reduced or removed. SOLUTION: The sample solution 1 and the phage solution 6 are mixed and the label substance is introduced by the infection of bacteriophage. Then, in order to reduce the fluorescence emitted by the fluorescent substance in the uninfected bacteriophage, for example, the pH adjuster 18, a halogen ion and other additives are added to optically detect the label substance in the bacteria in the sheath flow cell 26 to increase the signal/noise ratio.
