PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To facilitate visual check of a platen roller and an access thereto by supporting the platen roller in such a manner that it can be opened upward and can be brought into contact with and detached from a thermal head. SOLUTION: A platen roller 20 is supported in a top cover 50. The top cover 50 is supported rotatably on the same axis as the rotating shaft of a first roller 22 and made rotatable to an almost vertical position. The opening and closing of the top cover 50 are detected by a top cover opening-closing detecting switch 8. When the top cover 50 is opened, consequently, the platen roller 20 is exposed at a position near the height of eyes and therefore it can be seen with ease. On the occasion when a trouble such as rolling-up of stencil paper 2 happens, accordingly, the operation can be conducted easily at the position near the height of the operator's eyes.
