PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely detect incorrect collating even in the case where printing density and paper color are difference between a printed matter having an inspection image taken therein and a printed matter having a reference image taken therein. SOLUTION: When incorrect collating is detected on the basis of a reference image A image-inputted from a normal printed matter in advance and an inspection image E image-inputted from printed matter in a gathering process, by producing an inspection edge image B having an edge extracted from the reference image A, and producing an inspection edge image G having an edge extracted from the inspection image E, the occurrence of incorrect collating is detected through a comparison of these reference edge images and inspection edge images. Concretely, an expansion image C and contraction image D are produced from the reference edge image B, the inspection edge image G is mask-processed by the reference expansion image C, and the reference edge contraction image D is mask-processed by the inspection edge image G.
