PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To lengthen the service life of a shield boring machine by precisely stopping an advance of boring of the shield boring machine when a cutter front load becomes excessive by accurately measuring the cutter front load. SOLUTION: In a cutter front load detecting method of a shield boring machine having a cutter support structure 8 for transmitting a cutter front load S to a shield frame 1, a prescribed cutter front load S is made to act on a model of the cutter support structure 8 to predetermine the relationship between stress and displacement of model respective parts by a structural analysis, and a strain gauge 20 is arranged in a prescribed position in the cutter support structure 8 of the shield boring machine according to the generating direction of the stress obtained by the model to detect a stress 25 by the strain gauge 20 at boring advancing time of the shield boring machine to directly detect the cutter front load S the shield boring machine from a comparison between the detected stress 25 and a stress 25 of a structural analysis result.
