Hexacoordinated ruthenium and osmium catalysts of the formulae in which M and M' independently of one another are ruthenium or osmium; X, X', Y and Y' independently of one another are anionic ligands, or X and Y and X' and Y' in each case together are bis-anionic ligands L1 and L1' independently of one another are tertiary phosphine; L2 and L3 independently of one another are a monodentate ligand, or L2 and L3 together are bidentate, neutral electron donor ligands; L4 is tetradentate, neutral electron donor ligand; L5 is a bidentate, neutral electron donor ligand; and T and T' indepedently of one another are H or organic substituents, are useful for the synthesis of custom-tailored polymers and for the ring-closing metathesis of olefins.
