PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a biodegradable gel composition for growing plants, having excellent water- and shape-retentivity and capable of continuously supplying water to tame plants for a long term. SOLUTION: This gel composition for growing plants includes a water-soluble anionic polymeric compound, a metal salt and water, and meets the following conditions: (1) the water-soluble anionic polymeric compound is at least one kind of natural products selected from the group consisting of sodium alginate, carboxylated starch and carboxylated tamarind; (2) the etherification degree of the water-soluble anionic polymeric compound except sodium alginate is 0.4-1.6; (3) the metal of the metal salt is selected from the group consisting of aluminum, magnesium and calcium; (4) the weight ratio of the metal to the water-soluble anionic polymeric compound is 0.5-20 in the gel composition; (5) the water content is 30-99.9 wt.% based on the total weight of the gel composition.
