PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain benzoic acids and their esters reducing the deposition of metal, elevating yield and selectivity, useful for intermediates of medicine or the like by using palladium compounds and specific phosphines as a catalyst. SOLUTION: This compound expressed by formula II is obtained by reacting the aromatic compound (A) expressed by formula I (X is a halogen; R1 is trifluoromethyl, trifluoromethyloxy or the like; n is 0, 1-3), preferably, 3, 5-bis(trifluoromethyl)bromobenzene or the like and (E) carbon monoxide and (F) a hydroxy compound expressed by formula R2OH(R2 is H, a 1-10C alkyl), preferably, water, methanol or the like under the presence of (B) the metal compound of eighth group elements of the periodic system, (C) the phosphines expressed by formula: (R1)2P-Q-P(R1)2 (R1 is phenyl or the like; Q is a divalent group) and a base (D).
