PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for isomerizing a hydrocarbon by using a catalyst having high activity, without introducing a chlorine compound into the isomerization reaction process of the hydrocarbon. SOLUTION: This method for isomerizing a hydrocarbon comprises bringing a solid acid catalyst containing a carrier containing a part comprising zirconia and/or water-containing zirconia and sulfuric acid supported on the carrier into contact with a raw material hydrocarbon containing <=5 ppm, especially <=1 ppm water content in the presence of hydrogen. It is preferable that the solid acid catalyst comprises one or more kinds of metal components selected from VIII group, IX group and X group and the carrier comprises a part comprising zirconia and/or water-containing zirconia and a part comprising alumina and/or water-containing alumina.
