摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To monitor a variable valve control mechanism without any additional sensors, i.e., by using a conventionally available sensor for other purposes. SOLUTION: A secondary load signal NLS is formed based on a throttle valve opening angleαand an inlet valve signal EVS. A main load signal HLS is formed based on an intake air mass flow rate m1. The absolute value of a difference is taken between the main load signal HLS and the secondary load signal NLS, and this absolute value is compared with a threshold value S. If the absolute value of a difference is smaller than the threshold value, the functionality of valve control is determined, and an error message is outputted, when the absolute value of the difference is larger than the threshold value.
