A method for increasing luminance resolution of color panel systems includes inputting an image, I0, having a first resolution, wherein image I0 includes color difference images, C10, C20 and a luminance image, L0; manipulating images C10, C20 and L0 in a first course, including: filtering and subsampling the images to form images, C11, C21, and L1, having a second resolution, HxV; converting images C11, C21 and L1, to a first RGB domain image, RGB1; spatially multiplexing RGB1 into an image IA, having a third resolution, 2Hx2V; and manipulating image L1 in a second course, including: upsampling L1 to form L2, having the third resolution; forming a difference image, ID between L2 and L0; converting image ID into a second RGB domain image, RGB2,using predetermined values for C1 and C2; subsampling RGB2, spatially and chromatically, into an image IB having the third resolution; combining IA and IB, in a pixel-dependant manner, into an image IF; and dividing IF into RGB components at the second resolution.
