PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a stable orthoalkylation catalyst for phenols having high activity, high selectivity and long catalytic life and a method for producing orthoalkylated phenols using this catalyst. SOLUTION: The orthoalkylation catalyst for phenols contains (a) basic magnesium carbonate, (b) magnesium oxide and, if necessary, manganese oxalate and is obtained by calcining a catalyst precursor wherein a mixing wt. ratio [(a)/(b)] of (a) basic magnesium carbonate and (b) magnesium oxide is within the range of 20/80-80/20. Orthoalkylated phenols are produced by reacting phenols with alkyl alcohols in the presence of the orthoalkylation catalyst in a gaseous phase. |
