PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve operating performance of a document retaining means for reading stationary documents by separating the document retaining means into a document feeding tray of a document conveying means, and a document conveying part and a document discharge tray, for opening and closing. SOLUTION: A document conveying unit B is pivotally coupled by a shaft X to a image reading unit A, opened and closed on the image reading unit A as indicated by the arrow D, and opened during a document jam inside the document conveying unit B or reading of a stationary document. A document retaining means 50A is separated from the document conveying unit B in a state wherein the document conveying unit B is opened, and separately opened and closed from a document conveying unit main body around the shaft X as indicated by the arrow D, and a document retaining means 50B is opened and closed integrally with the document conveying unit B as indicated by the arrow D. In such manner, the document covering means is separately formed from a document feeding tray and the document conveying unit main body including a document conveying part and a document discharge tray, and is supported by the rotary shaft X.
