PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To moderate shock at the time when sheets are rushed between a feed roller and a retard roller in a sheet feeder. SOLUTION: This sheet feeder is provided with a feed roller 8 and a retard roller 10, capable of approaching and separating one another, for separating sheets fed from a sheet stacking means 1 one by one to convey them, and an energizing means 23 for making one roller out of the feed roller 8 and the retard roller 10 pressure-contact with another roller of them. A damping means 25 is further provided to moderate vibration of the energizing means 23 when one roller approaches or separates with respect to another roller at the time of sheet conveyance.
