PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a vinyl alcohol-based polymer composition containing a metal oxide, capable of retaining excellent gas barrier property without unevenness of performances even after being exposed under high temperature and high moisture atmosphere and bending conditions. SOLUTION: Polycondensation of a metal alkoxide or an oligomer and saponification reaction of a vinyl carboxylate-based polymer are parallel carried out in the same reaction system while removing a low boiling point material containing an organic solvent by using a solution containing a metal alkoxide or its oligomer, a carboxylic acid vinyl ester-based polymer and an organic solvent. In this case, the metal alkoxide or its oligomer is used at a such ratio that a metal atom in the metal alkoxide or its oligomer is within the range of 0.01-100 mol based on 100 mol acyl group derived from vinyl carboxylate unit in the vinyl carboxylate-based polymer.
