PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To convert a non-thermoplastic natural polymer into a thermoplastic material moldable in the same way as plastics while maintaining original characteristics by adding a small amount of a synthetic or natural thermoplastic polymer to a non-thermoplastic natural polymer and utilizing a pressure and a shear force through mechanical grinding, such as ball milling, in a dry state at a specified temperature. SOLUTION: The temperature during mechanical grinding is 70 deg.C or lower. Examples of non-thermoplastic natural polymers include cellulosic materials such as cotton and wood, and chitinous materials such as a lobster shell and a crab shell. A non-thermoplastic natural polymer is mixed with 5-20 wt.% chemically synthesized polyether, polyalcohol, polyester or polyolefin, natural polysaccharide, protein, or the like, and the mixture is ground by, e.g. a mechanical grinder to cause a mechanochemical reaction thus forming a composite exhibiting thermoplasticity. A thermoplastic composite can be thus produced from various natural polymer sources by a method wherein no solvent is used no waste material is generated, and the environmental load is very low.
