A thread guide roller, the effective diameter and thread-gripping action of which may be varied simultaneously, comprises annular discs 1, 2 integral with or mounted upon sleeves 3, 4 respectively, and having circular rows of intermeshing projections 13, 14 the thread-contacting faces or edges of which are concave and which thereby define a groove in which the thread runs in its path around the roller. While the sleeve 3 is fixed relative to the shaft 6 the sleeve 4 may be adjusted axially by means of a nut 7 to vary the effective diameter of the roll and at the same time to vary the angle of intersection of the juxtaposed concave surfaces. At increased effective diameter the amount of slip of the thread relative to the roller is increased and the angle of intersection reduced, both factors contributing to an increased threadgripping action. The reverse is true for a reduced effective adiameter. The projections 13,14 may be mounted between annular members or rings 9, 10 and 11,12 and fitted in annular recesses in the discs 1, 2. The cross-section of the projections in a plane perpendicular to the radius may be rectangular or trapezoidal. The roller finds particular application as a preliminary doffing roller of the type that runs at greater speed than the thread in a textile double-twist twisting machine. |
