A salt bath for nitriding a metal article is generated by a composition of matter consisting essentially of a mixture of: (a) 10-90% by weight of said mixture of at least one salt selected from Li, Na, K, Mg, Ca and Ba salts of 2,4,6-tricyanamido-sym-triazine (I); (b) 90-10% by weight of said mixture of at least one salt selected from Li, Na, K, Mg, Ca and Ba salts of 2,5,8-tricyanamido-1,3,4,7,9,9b-heptaazaphenolen (II); and (c) at least one defined salt as an optional ingredient, in an amount up to 30%, based on the weight of the mixture of (a) and (b). The salt bath may be regenerated by addition thereto of at least one compound selected from (I), (II), amino- and/or hydroxy-trisubstituted sym-triaizine, melem, dimelemon, melon and melam. The nitriding process and the composition per se, also form part of the claimed invention. |
