[Also in Groups XII and XXVI] In combustion equipment such as main or reheat combustion equipment of a jet propulsion unit comprising a chamber through which a mixture of fuel and air flows, means are provided for effecting ignition or for improving combustion of the mixture by creating in the flow path of the mixture an intense electric field producing ionizing discharges, by the application of a high voltage between one or a plurality of pairs of electrodes oppositely disposed radially of the combustion chamber, the spacing of the electrodes of each pair and the applied voltage being such that no sparking occurs. In Fig. 2 a pair of oppositely-disposed electrodes 1 and 2 is disposed downstream of a flame-holder device 3 having a fuel injector nozzle 5 centrally disposed therein, the electrodes being connected to a source 4 of alternating high voltage. The ends of the electrodes are pointed so as to ensure ignition of the fuel and air mixture. In Fig. 5 a second pair of electrodes 6, 7 in the form of plates is disposed downstream of the pointed electrodes, all four electrodes being supplied from the same source and so connected that at any instant, the pointed electrode and the plate at the same side have the same polarity; alternatively the connections may be made so that the pointed electrode and the plate at the same side have opposite polarity as in Fig. 7. The voltage applied to the electrodes 1, 2, 6 and 7 is taken from an alternator 4 through a regulator 8 and transformer 9, the alternator supplying, say, 120 volts, three phase, 400 cycles, and the output of the transformer being at, say, 20 kilovolts. The voltage applied to the electrodes may be regulated in dependence on delivery pressure of the engine compressor, the fuel-toair ratio of the mixture, the altitude of the aircraft or the temperature of the combustion gases. Fluid type flame stabilizer screens may be used in place of solid type.
