PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide spacers for a liquid crystal display element which enable to realize the liquid crystal display element holding high quality display performance, without adversely affecting the liquid crystal such as disturbance of alignment of the liquid crystal, even if strong impacts are given to the liquid crystal display element. SOLUTION: The reaction of a monomer, having either a hydroxyl group or a group which changes into a hydroxyl group n an aqueous medium, is carried out plural times, in a system where particulates exist, so as to form a first coating layer comprising a resin with a hydroxyl group on the particulates. Subsequently, the particulates with the first coating layer and a compound having a long chain alkyl group are reacted to form the second coating layer comprising a substance with a long-chain alkyl group. Spacers for a liquid crystal display element are characterized by having no hydroxyl group in the substance constituting the surface of the particulates, in a resin constituting the first coating layer and in the substance constituting the second coating layer respectively.
