PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To select information and to conduct calling, call reception and dialing with a few operations without looking into a keyboard. SOLUTION: The portable information terminal is provided with a storage means 4 that stores registered information and a rhythm pattern corresponding to the registered information, a rhythm detection means 2 that detects magnitude of rhythm vibration applied to a casing to output a rhythm signal on the basis of the vibration, and a rhythm pattern recognition means 3 that generates the rhythm pattern according to the magnitude and the generated interval of a plurality of rhythm signals outputted from the rhythm detection means 2 and retrieves the rhythm signal from the rhythm pattern stored in the storage means 4.
