A suction cup fastener for hold a component against a smooth surface consists of the cup (4) itself and a core (2). It incorporates a magnet (12) fixed inside the cup to provide an additional force for holding the cup against smooth surface of a ferrous metal, with both cup and magnet designed to be in contact with the surface and the magnet positioned so that the cup is deformed into its fastening position when the magnet is in contact with the smooth surface.
