PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coin discriminating means which can surely detect the state of the peripheral side face of a coin by means of one light receiving element. SOLUTION: An optical sensor 3 is integrally incorporated with a light emitting element and a light receiving element, projects the light emitted from the light emitting element upon the peripheral side face of a coin moving on a coin conveyance path P, receives the reflected light from the side face by means of the light receiving element, and outputs the signal corresponding to the intensity of the reflected light. A current-voltage converting circuit 5 converts the output signal of the sensor 3 into a voltage and a voltage change detecting circuit 6 only detects such a voltage change that exceeds a prescribed value. A square wave transforming circuit 7 transforms the change into a square wave and a CPU 1 discriminates the coin C by comparing the output of the circuit 7 with reference data stored in a memory 2.
