PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To keep the quality of a workpiece without damaging a furnace even when temperature in an external heating rotary kiln furnace is rapidly raised. SOLUTION: An external heating rotary kiln furnace is adapted such that a cylindrical kiln furnace 1 rotatable around an axis is heated with a heating furnace 2c provided on an external surroundings of the kiln furnace 1 and hereby a workpiece 8 is transferred from an inlet 1a to an outlet 1b in the kiln furnace 1 following the rotation of the furnace. In the furnace, kiln furnace outlet side outer surface temperature in the heating furnace 2c is measured with a radiation thermometer 15, and in response to measured temperature a heating source (electric heater 3) in the heating furnace 2c is controlled. With the construction where the temperature is controlled by monitoring the kiln furnace outer surface temperature, fusion of the kiln furnace is avoided, and the quality of a workpiece is kept unchanged irrespective of a change in a throughput.
