PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a sharp image without distortion and blackishness even at a filing part by placing a book original on a platen of an image reader without spreading the book original to its extreme horizontal posture. SOLUTION: The platen 3 of the image reader 1 is extended up to a position of a side plate 4 and an original D is read while the original D is depressed onto an edge 5 at its filing position D1. A mirror m1 of a full rate carriage 11 provided to a scanner 10 that is moved under the platen 3 is tilted by an angleθ1 so as to allow the scanner 10 can scan even at an edge of the platen 3. Thus, the scanner can read up to the edge of the original even when the carriage 11 is in the state of press contact with the side plate.
