PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To extract more accurately the positions of important parts such as the eyes and a mouth by rotating a real face image in a line symmetrical way to obtain a mirror image of the face, deciding an optimum angle to obtain the least degree of coincidence based on the collation of both eyes between the real and mirror images of the face and with an angle formed between a line connecting together the key positions of both eyes and a horizontal scanning line passing through a middle point defined as a parameter and then correcting the key positions. SOLUTION: A real face image is rotated in a line symmetrical way with a straight line passing through a middle point O between the key positions X and Y of both eyes and parallel to a vertical scanning line defined as an axis to obtain a mirror image of the face (S4). The angleαformed between a line E connecting the positions X and Y together and a horizontal scanning line H passing through the point O is set atα1 (S5). An image near both eyes of the real face image is collated with an image near both eyes of a mirror image of the face to decide a degree F of coincidence between both images (S6). The degree F is substituted for F (n) (S7), and n is gradually increased with the angleαgradually decreased respectively (S8). At a prescribed angleα2 (S9), the angleαis defined as an optimum angleαe with the least degree F (n) of coincidence (S10).
