PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a wide screen discriminating circuit for reducing the costs of a TV set. SOLUTION: This circuit is provided with a counter 1 for counting a horizontal deflection signal HD synchronously with a vertical fly-back erasing signal, a comparator 2 for outputting a matching signal when the count value of the counter 1 is matched with a prescribed comparison value, a timer 3 for outputting a prescribed timing clock according to the matching signal, an analog/digital converter 4 for converting the signal level of a video signal into a digital signal based on the timing clock, a storage device 5 for storing data outputted by the analog/digital converter 4, and a deciding circuit 6 for deciding whether or not the fetched video signal is the signal level of a video signal based on the data stored in the storage device 5.
