PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To avoid a troublesome copy operation. SOLUTION: An image recorder 1 is provided with a facsimile function and a printer function or the like controlled by CPUs 26, 34. After reading an image, a hand scanner 2 is connected to the image recorder 1 by a communication cord. The image recorder 1 is provided with an original sensor 29 that senses whether or not an original is set to itself, a copy button, and a sensor that senses connection of the cord to the image recorder 1. When the copy button is depressed, the image recorder 1 detects whether or not an original is set to itself, copies the original when the original is set, and detects the connection of the cord when no original is set, and copies the original read by the hand scanner when the cord is connected. Since the image recorder 1 automatically selects a copied original, the troublesome copy operation can be avoided.
