PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress the generation of dust and static electricity on an alignment layer-forming material layer at rubbing and to make the surface of an alignment layer hard to scuff by using a mixture of specified polyvinyl alcohol compounds separately liable to and less liable to orient. SOLUTION: An alignment layer-forming material layer comprising a mixture of polyvinyl alcohol compounds of formulae I and II is formed on one face of a long-sized flexible sheet. In the formulae, L11 and L21 are each alkyleneoxycarbonyl which may have -O-, -CO-, -NH-, -NR-, -S-, -SO2- or 6 to 24C arylene in the middle, R represents 1-4C alkyl or 6-15C aryl, R11 and R12 represents each H or alkyl, R12 and R22 each represents lower alkyl, x1, x2, y1, y2, z1 and z2 represent the amounts (mol %) of repeating units, x1 and x2 each represents 10-99.9 mol %, y1 and y2 each represents 0.01-80 mol %, and k1 and k2 are each 0 or 1. |
