PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make read processing of an image in a plurality of areas of one an the same original efficient. SOLUTION: A user of a client device 10 sets a read area while observing a preliminary scanning image of an original. The device 10 informs a scanner 20 of the set information, which is registered in an area management table 223. In the case of setting a plurality of read areas of the original, the scanner 20 is in standby until designation of a plurality of the areas is completed. When the designation of all the read areas is finished, an image read section 24 of the scanner 20 optically reads an image of the original and an image memory 26 stores the read image. A segmentation processing section 227 acquires coordinate data of each read area from the area management table 228 to segment an image of an area corresponding to the coordinate data from the image memory 26. This image is fed to the client device 10 via an image processing section 229 and a communication processing section 221. This segmentation processing is repeated for all the designated read area.
