PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high color rendering metal halide lamp with an arbitrary lighting direction and a little color temperature variation. SOLUTION: In this metal halide lamp, mercury, rare gas, and no less than one kind of rare-earth metal halides are enclosed in a quartz glass luminous tube via an exhaust pipe (tip tube), and the tip tube is enclosed by heating and melting. Electric power of the lamp is less than or equal to 150 W. In this case, after enclosing the tip tube, the length A (mm) from a flat part of the external surface of the luminous tube to the upper surface of the tip part and the length B (mm) from a flat part of the inner surface of the luminous tube to the lower surface of the tip tube are made in the range of 0<A<=1.0, -0.5<=B<=0.3 by machining by laser or the like.
