PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the durability of a double-layer coating type magnetic recording medium and to inhibit the progress of rusting. SOLUTION: Each face of a nonmagnetic substrate 1 is doubly coated with a nonmagnetic layer 2 as a lower layer and a magnetic layer 3 as an upper layer and a hard carbon protective coat 4 is formed on the magnetic layer 3. The thickness of the protective coat 4 is 1-20 nm. Since the strength of the protective coat 4 is very high, durability is significantly improved. Since the protective coat 4 has also a corrosion preventing effect, the deterioration of characteristics, e.g. due to the corrosion of a ferromagnetic powder is inhibited.
