PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce installing space on a drum and costs by sharing an erasing head between going and returning paths. SOLUTION: The inclining angle of the rotary shaft of a drum is controlled in such a manner that when a tape T travels in a going direction A, the odd- number tracks are scanned by an erasing head 1 and a head A1 for a going path in this order, and even-number tracks are scanned by an erasing head 2 and a head for going path A2 in this order, and when the tape T travels in a returning direction B, odd-number tracks for a returning path are scanned by the erasing head 1 and a head B1 for a returning path in this order, and even-number tracks for a returning path are scanned by the erasing head 2 and a head B2 for a returning path in this order.
