PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processor with an image area separate means that can surely detect even a character with low contrast. SOLUTION: The image processor has the image area separation means 7, 8 that apply image separation processing to image information received from a scanner 1 depending on a kind of the image. In the image area separation means 7, 8, a primary discrimination circuit 7 detects directivity in a density change and a contrast of the received image information on the basis of local information for the received image information and a discrimination correction circuit 8 discriminates whether an area with high contrast indicates a character edge or other edge than the character edge on the basis of the result of detection of the directivity received from the primary discrimination circuit 7. Thus, the processor can detect even a character with low contrast as a character. |
