PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader whose image pickup element can sufficiently be cooled without deteriorating read accuracy of the image pickup element. SOLUTION: A line image pickup element (CCD) is supported by a support frame 45 in a vibration-proof state from a worktable 27 in a way that the CCD can freely be close to/apart from a photo film 22. On the other hand, a cooling base 210 is supported in an upper part of a cover member 44 that is supported by the worktable 27 and has a cooling fan 220 that exhausts wind blown onto the line CCD externally. When a placing stand 47 of the line CCD is moved in a direction of the arrow A in the case of automatic focus control or zooming, the cooling base 210 is also moved in following to the stand 47 so that a distance between the placing stand 4 and the cooling base 210 is kept within a prescribed range. As a result, the cooling fan 220 driven at reading of an image effectively cools the line CCD so as to ensure prescribed reading precision.
